Federal cabinet meets to discuss govt-TLP agreement, economic matters today

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet, with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair, is meeting in the capital on Tuesday to discuss the political and economic situation of the country.

According to Bol News, during the meeting, the participants will deliberate over the situation in the country amid the outlawed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protest and the government’s recent agreement with it. The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will also highlight its strategy to deal with the group, and its stance over TLP’s demands in the meeting.

The TLP on Monday had called off their march to the capital and ended its occupation of a major highway after reaching a deal with the government.

The banned TLP was protesting over the detention of its leader Saad Rizvi, arrested in April, and was demanding the expulsion of the French ambassador from Pakistan. Several thousand supporters had begun a march from Lahore to Islamabad earlier in October.

Key decisions expected 

The federal cabinet will also be briefed about vacant positions in the commerce, information and broadcasting sectors, said Bol News. The forum is expected to approve the lifting of the ban on the import of vintage cars.

An amendment in the 1973 Rules of Business related to the construction of houses will be approved. Approval of appointment of Brig (retd) Shuja ul Hassan as the Pakistan Steel Mills chief executive officer is also on the agenda. The forum will approve the reconstruction of Gems and Jewellery Development Company.

The appointment of the Board of Governors of Sheikh Zayed Post Graduate Medical Institute Lahore and PIMS is also included in the agenda. The nominations of ex-officio directors in the boards of subsidiary companies of the Petroleum Division will be reviewed. Approval for the appointment of the chief executive officer of General Power Generation Company Guddo will also be given.

Additional responsibility for the Lakhra Power Generation Company CEO would be approved. Approval of the appointment of the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company CEO is also on the agenda.

The members of the governing body of the Pakistan Engineering Council will be nominated for the next four years. Decisions of the Economic Coordination Committee and Cabinet Legislative Committee would be approved. The verdict of the Islamabad High Court regarding the development of Sector E-12 of Islamabad will be reviewed.
The cabinet will be briefed about economic indicators of the first quarter of the ongoing financial year.
